Hurricanes are common. They cause alot of damage. How do hurricanes form?Hurricanes are the result of warm oceanwater and the rotation of the Earth.Hurricanes take thermal energy (heat)from the ocean. They turn this heat intomechanical energy (wind). Warm, humidair is fuel for a hurricane. This is whyhurricanes often form in tropical regionsnear the coast. Hurricanes travelthousands of miles from their point oforigin.

The eye, or center, of a hurricanemeasures about 20 to 30 miles indiameter. Wind speeds can be morethan 155 miles per hour. However, this isnot the most dangerous part of ahurricane. Storm surges are moredeadly. A storm surge is the build up ofwater in front of a hurricane. This causesflash flooding. Climate change is likelyto make serious hurricanes even morecommon in the future.
