NASA made history this summer. The spacecraft New Horizons made it to Pluto. It sent back pictures. Until now, scientists did not have any good photos of Pluto. Now we have excellent photos of Pluto and Charon. (Charon is Pluto’s biggest moon.) Scientists will analyze the photos to learn more about Pluto. One of the photos is already famous because part of the icy surface looks like a heart.

New Horizons launched in January, 2006. It is the fasted spacecraft ever launched from Earth. It went 16.26 kilometers a second. It took almost 10 years for New Horizons to go 4 billion kilometers to Pluto. It reached Pluto on July 14 this year and took photos. New Horizons got a lot of data from Pluto. It will take 16 months for all of the data to reach scientists on Earth.
