Raclette is a type of cheese. It is also the name of a traditional dish from Switzerland. It is very popular in European countries like France and Germany. Raclette is made with a plate of cooked potatoes, sliced meat, pickles, and grilled vegetables. Hot, melted raclette cheese is poured on top of everything. It’s a simple and very delicious meal. This is heaven for cheese lovers. People say that Swiss shepherds made raclette hundreds of years ago. It was by accident. The shepherds went to work high up in the Swiss Alps. They needed to bring food with them that would not spoil during the summer months. Things like potatoes and cheese. They always roasted potatoes in fire. One time, some cheese was too close to the fire and it melted. The shepherds tasted the melted cheese and loved it. What a tasty discovery.
