Past studies said that bilinguals focus more easily than monolinguals. Bilinguals are also less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease. A new study showed another benefit for bilinguals –their brains are bigger; their brains have more grey matter. This extra grey matter is in the executive control area of the brain. This area of the brain controls higher cognitive functions, so bilingual shave a strong ability to use critical thinking and analysis.
Grey matter grows in a similar way to muscles. When a person exercises, their muscles grow. When a person studies a second language, their grey matter grows. Bilinguals exercise their brains by learning to think in a new language. They are not always smarter than monolinguals, but they have very good reasoning abilities. Also, grey matter can grow at any age. Learning a second language is an excellent cure for forgetfulness in old age.
