Birdwatching, or birding, is a classic hobby. People use binoculars and cameras to observe the lives of local birds. Gabriel Willow of the New York Audubon Society said that she loves the “thrill” of finding birds. Willow joined many other bird watchers, or birders, in New York City. They were looking for arare Couch’s Kingbird. Usually, the Couch’s Kingbird lives in warmer places, but one of these birds recently flew to Manhattan.

Birders help scientists by observing the normal and abnormal behavior of birds. In fact, the Audubon Society has an annual Christmas Bird Count. Ordinary people simply count the number of birds in their area. “It’s a tremendously valuable resource for researchers” said Audubon's chief scientist Gary Langham. Birding is both educational and inexpensive. Families often go birding together because people of any age can enjoy this activity.
