“It’s like trying to find a needle in ahaystack.” This classic English idiomdescribes the difficulty of looking forone small thing in the middle of manyother things. Most people only useidioms to describe situations; however, conceptual artist Sven Sachsalberdecided to use this idiom literally. In hisrecent art show at the Palais de Tokyogallery in Paris, France, Sachsalber triedto find a needle in a stack of hay.
Before the 24-hour show, the presidentof the Palais de Tokyo hid a small silverneedle in a large pile of hay. Sachsalbercompared his artwork to the lottery.“You hope you’re going to win … and it’sthe same thing here - there’s alwayshope,” he said. After 18 hours, he gave ahappy shout. He found the needle in thehaystack. In past art shows, Sachsalberspent 24 hours with a cow and actedlike a squirrel.
