February 2nd is the Groundhog Daycelebration. In the U.S., Groundhog Dayis a folk holiday. It began in 1887 in thecity of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Agroundhog is a small ground animal.Punxsutawney Phil is the officialgroundhog of Groundhog Day. Hecomes out of his burrow on February2nd. Sometimes, he sees his shadow.Then, there will be six more weeks ofwinter. Sometimes, he does not see hisshadow. Then, the winter will end soon.
This tradition comes from Europe. Therewas a similar holiday there. It was calledCandlemas. Germans brought theirtraditions to the New World. There, thetraditions changed and becameGroundhog Day. Today, thousands ofpeople visit Punxsutawney Phil. There iseven a webcast of the celebration. In1993, Groundhog Day was the name ofa popular movie. It starred Bill Murray.Tim Minchin plans to make the movieinto a musical.
