Some workers at Cambridge University in England had a surprise. They worked to install electrical cables in the walls of a building. Then, they found an old shoe inside the wall. Archaeologists think the shoe is 300 years old – a man’s shoe. Someone put it in the wall in the 1600 or 1700s. Secret shoes in the wall is a very old tradition. People began doing this in Europe in the 1300s. Historians say the builders hid shoes in buildings.

They thought the shoes protected people from evil spirits. In Europe, they found many “good luck” shoes. They were in public buildings like churches, palaces and monasteries. These lucky shoes are often a child’s shoe. It is putin the chimney, wall or roof of a building. At Cambridge University, the construction is finished. They returned the shoe to the wall. Now they can have more good luck.
